The Board Challenge is a national initiative launched to address the underrepresentation of Black leaders on U.S. corporate boards. Spearheaded by Altimeter Capital, Valence, and theBoardlist, and brought to life through a partnership with Global Gateway Advisors and 3Motion Creative, the campaign called on companies to pledge to appoint at least one Black director within a year. 3Motion Creative was tapped to produce the core video campaign that would capture the mission, energy, and impact of this powerful movement.

Challenge

Despite growing awareness of the importance of diversity, many corporate boards lacked Black representation. The challenge was to transform this awareness into actionable commitments from corporate leaders, creating a campaign that would inspire, educate, and mobilize change at the highest levels of business.

Approach

To generate momentum and visibility, the campaign strategically engaged CEOs and corporate leaders, encouraging them to publicly commit to board diversity. 3Motion Creative developed emotionally resonant, purpose-driven video content that anchored the campaign's media rollout. These videos were featured across key platforms, from Nasdaq and NYSE events to internal leadership summits. The campaign also included a one-hour CNBC special, coordinated influencer engagement, and robust media outreach to extend the message nationwide.

outcome

The Board Challenge achieved significant milestones, including the appointment of 21 Black directors to U.S. corporate boards within its first two years. One-third of all new S&P 500 board directors in 2021 identified as Black, a major shift influenced by the movement. The campaign earned the PRSA-NY Big Apple Award for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging, and established a lasting framework for driving systemic change through public commitment and storytelling.
